Rigging & Engineering Stamp Guidelines

Trade Show Rigging Regulations

Quick Reference - Rigging and Engineering Stamp Guidelines

Understanding and following proper rigging regulations is essential for exhibitor safety and compliance. These guidelines can vary significantly between venues, cities, and even counties, so always consult your specific show services kit for the most accurate information. Local jurisdiction codes will always take precedence over general contractor standards.

Engineering Stamp Requirements

Revised regulations state that a structure’s engineering stamp is valid if the following conditions are met:

  • The stamp is issued by a structural or civil engineering firm in the United States.
  • The structure has not been modified since the original design stamp was issued.
  • Crucially, venue, municipality, or state codes will take precedence over General Contractor standards. If a local code is more stringent, it must be followed.

This revised rule provides much-needed flexibility, allowing exhibitors to use their existing stamped components across different shows without needing a new stamp for each event, as long as local rules don't mandate it.

Hanging Signs and Graphics Requirements

  • Weight Threshold - Signs over 250 lbs may require secondary lifting devices (chain hoists)
  • Assembly Restrictions - Only official General Service Contractors (GSC) can assemble, install, and remove overhead hanging elements
  • Supervision Only - Your team or Exhibitor Appointed Contractors can supervise but cannot perform rigging work
  • Lift Access - Only GSC employees are permitted in lifts
  • Custom Elements - Lightboxes, headers, and video wall surrounds require stamped certification from licensed U.S. engineers
  • Structural Integrity - All signs (except cloth banners and signs under 100 lbs, typically) must have structurally engineered rigging points
  • Safety Review - All signs may be reviewed for structural integrity pre-show and during installation
  • Manufacturer Compliance - Modular signage systems must use approved manufacturer hanging hardware

Video Wall Regulations

  • Engineering Certification Required - All non-serially manufactured LED and video display systems need stamped engineering certification
  • Standards Compliance - Must meet ANSI E1.50-1 standards
  • Assembly Plan - Detailed assembly and disassembly plan must be submitted to GSC for review

Tie-Off Requirements

  • Stamped Certification Needed - Required for booth elements needing venue structure support (headers, seismic lines)
  • Pre-authorization Essential - Contact GSC in advance if anticipating tie-off services
  • Structural Integrity Verification - Licensed engineer must affirm structural soundness.

  • Suggested lead times may vary depending on current orders. Please check with Customer Service.
  • Production lead times are based on business days and DO NOT include any shipping days.
  • Production-ready artwork (when applicable) must accompany the order confirmation. Delays in uploading artwork may lead to expedited charges or shipping changes.
  • No order will be released to Production without a signed order confirmation.
  • Shipping is based on the availability of materials and graphics. Additional charges may apply if materials or graphics must be expedited.
  • Standard lead times do not apply to orders of multiple quantities.
Exhibit Weight varies depending on the packaging and the shipping method. Variables include but are not limited to:
  • Dimensional Weight vs. Actual Weight: Dimensional weight is defined as crate or case size. On most air shipments, the dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight
  • Portable Cases vs. Wood Crates or Molded Tubs (where applicable): Exhibit designs that require one wood crate would require multiple portable cases. Selecting one vs. the other affects the total weight (dimensional or actual).
  • Freight Carrier: LTL carriers (Less than Truckload) quote freight based on space used. UPS, FedEx, and air freight carriers quote freight based on either the dimensional or the actual weight of the shipment.
  • Freight Service Level (number of days): Service levels range from Same Day Delivery to Two Week Delivery.
For more information about exhibit weights and freight options, please contact your local exhibit representative.
Electrical, Cord, and Wire Management varies depending on the display and each exhibitor's requirements. When ordering your trade show display, consider the following electrical/wire management issues and discuss your options with an exhibit professional:
  • Inline vs. Island Displays
  • Lead Retrieval Devices
  • Computer and Monitor Cables
  • Demo Equipment
  • Overhead Lighting
  • Grommets and Grommet Placement in Counters
  • Overhead vs. Floor Power Supply
  • Flooring and Electrical Wiring
  • Options for Hiding Cords and Cables
  • Flat vs. Round Electrical Cords
  • Multi-Plug Outlets and Extension Cords
By reviewing your wiring options BEFORE you order your display, you'll save TIME and MONEY and ensure your exhibit exceeds your expectations and your installation is trouble-free.
